Writing Prompt: Day 91

91.jpgDay 91 of 365 Days of Writing Prompts: Only use body language to express characters’ emotions.

Erin: The couple at the table next to me weren’t talking at all. He had one hand on her leg, and her other leg was entangled with his. Their eyes were locked in on one another. Her lips pulled up in the corners slight as he winked. For a brief second her cheeks flushed pink, before she ran her hands through his hair. His lips curled up as she bit her own. With every additional action they did, my body stiffened and my eyes started to wonder elsewhere in the room.

Shannon: She was pulling at her sleeves, looking like she was trying to stretch the fabric to a length of her own creation. Her eyes were turned to the ground, and she was rocking back in forth on her feet. I didn’t know who she was, I spotted her from a park bench, but she obviously didn’t want to go into the building she was standing in front of.

I wanted to know why. Was she about to see a person she was nervous to meet? Was she going to an interview? Was she about to hear news her mind was afraid to process?

She started pacing and her lips began moving. Talking to herself I presumed, since no one was there to listen, and no headphones in her ears for her to sing along to.

I started closing my eyes to take deep breaths in in and out, trying to calm her emotions with some kind of magical power, only because I didn’t want to interfere if she would eventually do it on her own. Everyone deserves to feel the courage of overcoming something on their own when they can, but I couldn’t sit there and do nothing. I guess I needed to mute my own feelings too. When I open my eyes again she grabbed the door, and soon enough she was inside.

Use words to describe characters’ feelings without words?

  1. She grimaced into the half-empty tumbler before her, trying to scare the drops of blood coagulating on the ice chips. When she took a deep, trembling breath, her fingers clutching at her other arm, she drew blood and inhaled sharply. Rubbing her injury hastily, she couldn’t stop glancing at the table in the corner; the couple necking in wanna-be goth clothes were the unwanted targets tonight. Without her permission, her sharp incisors began imbedding themselves in her lower lip and her whole body tensed like a predator on the hunt.
Pausing to dab at her lip, she clenched her fist, pursed her lips painfully and shrugged down on the barstool. When she gripped the glass with inhuman strength and drained the rest of the red liquid, her shoulders relaxed slightly, lending to a more attractive figure. With fresh blood dripping from her teeth, she growled territorially and hunched her shoulders out of instinct.
Behind her, a tall shadow lingered, careful not to spook the riled vampire. But when he moved swiftly to occupy the next seat, a guttural noise echoed in the bar and he raised his hands to her. She shied from his proximity and hopped off her stool, leaning against the bar top to clean her teeth of gore. Turning back, she grimaced at him, showing off her sparkling teeth, and stalked toward the couple in the corner. Her shoulders were hunched forward and there was a certain stiffness to her steps that made the man want her more. But as she leaned in for the kill, snarling from her gut, she turned to grin toothily at the shadow.

  2. Created to Write:
Country Lass walks through the room, thankful that Stark has soundproof boots for emergencies. She walks passed round sensors with microphones in them. She looks at Falcon as he stoops next to one of them. He examines it, then looks at Captain America. He nods solemnly.
Cap furrows his brows. His back is light from the lack of a shield. Lass follows his lead as their shields would create too much noise and they couldn’t afford to lose from vibrations.
The team heads down the hallway. There are no guards as there is a timer to when the bomb will go off. The other two teams are at the other buildings throughout the city, all rigged to blow.
Lass digs her heels into the ground right as Cap stops. Falcon stops last. Cap checks around the corner, then waves them on. Lass tugs on his sleeve. Cap looks at her. She points to the two direction they could go.
Cap points down one hall. Lass bugs her eyes and suggests the other way. He shakes his head, furrowing his brow more. Lass turns on her headset and lights up the map. She points to the right. Cap reads the map, then relents. They turn that way, only to find guards with silencers.
Cap reaches for his back, only to find it empty. Falcon goes ahead and takes them out with pressure points. The two super soldiers follow and turn a corner. Lass takes out her knife to hit one guard over the head with the handle. His body crumples towards one of the sensors. Cap grabs the front of his uniform at the last second.
He pointedly looks at Lass. She shrugs, putting the knife away. Cap shakes his head, restraining himself from sighing right next to a sensor. He motions for the others to keep going. Lass follows, eager to get out of the ticking time bomb building. When they reach the bomb, she looks at Sam, pleading in her eyes as she hopes that he can disarm it.
She’d really prefer seeing her family again.
