Writing Prompt: Day 309

309Day 309 of 365 Days of Writing Prompts: Incorporate these 3 words: Privilege, Untrustworthy, & End.

Erin: He lost the privilege of my trust. The hurt behind his eyes over me calling him untrustworthy was nearly comical. The only problem was when I tried to explain where I was coming from he didn’t understand. I wanted to salvage what we still clung on to, but him being clueless meant it was the end for me.

Shannon: “Tell me about this one mama. What’s his curse,” my daughter questioned, placing the book of clients on my lap. Then she snuggled into my side, ready for story time. She was a curious one.

“Ok one, but then you have to go to bed,” I agreed and she didn’t argue, just pointed eagerly at a face. “Ah this one,” I began, “He was born to a life of privilege, and he was cursed with never spending a single day wanting something he couldn’t have. Until one day he was denied the thing he carved most. There was no end to what he would do. He became uncaring, untrustworthy, and unkind. Because of this he never succeeded.”

Let these words lead the story.

  1. The team finally makes it back to the house, down to the basement, and out of harms way. Josh carries Jacey to the infirmary. The moment Rick sees her, he’s out of his seat. “You said you were alright.”
    “She’s just exhausted,” Josh assures.
“And dirty,” she mumbles, “How do we get this stuff off again?”
“…Soak your clothes in olive oil.”
Everyone turns to look at Finn.
“…To get it out of skin, it’s a bit more complex,” he says, shrinking back as he sees the stares. “…What? If it’s like tar-”
“Come with me, Finn,” August says. As he says that, Josh turns back to the infirmary and Rick goes to their supplies to examine the substance. August walks to the training room, pulling off his gloves.
Finn follows him. “…I know I messed-”
“You’re damn right you messed up,” August says, turning around. He takes a breath, “Finn, you abandoned the team. We needed you and you ran.”
“I know, and I’m sorry, but-”
“Is this really what you want?”
    Finn looks up, “What?”
“I know we… we might have pressured you into joining us. You have these abilities, which are a privilege not many people have,” August says calmly, “but… maybe you aren’t fit to be part of the team.”
    “…What? Why?”
“If you are going to run when you are in danger, then-”
“I lived on the streets for almost a half year, August!” Finn rationalizes, “you learn to fend for yourself.”
“But that kind of behavior is untrustworthy here,” August explains, “you are part of a team, Finn. It’s not about you, it’s about us. And it’s not even about us, it’s about the people out there-” August jabs up to the street, “-who can’t protect themselves from people like him. We aren’t out there for us, and we aren’t out there alone.”
“…What do you suggest I do?” Finn asks, his voice small.
“I suggest you think about if this is what you want to use your power for,” August states, “whether you can work with a team, or if this is the end of Starry Knight.”
August walks closer, putting a hand on his shoulder.
“The choice is yours, Finn. We don’t want to put you in danger you can’t handle, but we also need to know you will have our backs if you are out there.”
Finn nods, so August goes to see if he can help Rick.
